DSLR

I have been drooling over digital SLR cameras for a couple years now, but timing has yet to work out for me to get one.  We are either trying to save up for one reason or another (and I feel guilty getting one, my husband has been nothing but encouraging with the whole thing) or I just don't have the time to devote to learning how to use the camera and practice with it.  But, I am hoping that my time will come soon.  I recently got a huge magazine/book talking about all things photography from a beginner level on up.  I have read a good portion of it, and I feel like I have a better grasp on shutter speed, f-stop, ISO, etc.  I have also been doing a lot of research trying to decide exactly what I want to get!  There are so many options for the basic camera alone and then after you finally decide on a camera there are a million lenses to chose from.  Hopefully I will be able to find a few good ones to cover most of what I want to do in the beginning and then I can expand as I go.  If anyone has a suggestion or advice for me to consider, please give it to me!  I am so excited!

I have also been reading a lot about the advantages of shooting RAW.  I love the idea of being able to go back and manipulate just about any part of your picture.  I will probably end up as one of the people who mostly shoots JPEG as I don't have enough time to go back and put a lot of effort into every picture I take, but it's something I am excited to try playing around with.  It sounds like there are some huge advantages.

As if I don't miss Colorado and New Mexico enough as it is, a friend of mine posted a link to The Pikes Peak Guy on facebook and I have been looking at his pictures and feeling inspired.  Oh how I miss the mountains!  If you love beautiful pictures, check it out.  You won't be disappointed.

Hey girlie!!!

Please please check out Pioneer Woman. She is awesome! I have only read her photography posts and haven't even delve into the other awesome stuff she has. But she has great posts on exposure and aperture and explains in real lamens terms.

It seems like all the people on the blogs use either a nikon or a canon. I didn't do much research on my and got mine at wal-mart...an Olympus e420. It was the most economical (still expensive) and the lens it came with wasn't that impressive, but I have ordered 2 more (pretty pricey) and the one I got is much sharper.

A great resource, awesome resource in fact for picking out what kind of camera and lens you want would be to check our the http://www.digital-slr-guide.com/

My camera is very popular in the UK and is manufactured in Japan, so I don't see many people with my type, but I am comfortable and happy with it. It is the lightest weight dslr, so it has that going for it.

Olympus puts their lenses into 3 classes and I ordered new lenses that are in the middle class so I think those will be better. I am not sure if nikon and canon put their's into classes of quality or not, but that source should help you decide.

If you see blogs for which you love their photos, they usually post what kind of camera they use. Also check out kevin and amanda.com, she takes pretty photos...

i heart faces.com

That's all I can think of now...hope these links help you. It is very fun once you get the hang of it. I am trying to get more comfortable taking photos without people seeing me or becoming comfortable with taking pics while people are watching me...hahaha!

Oh..a lot of the photographers you see that get paid to take portraits are self taught, so don't be discouraged! And there are local college classes you can take for probably 100 bucks for a couple days of training.

That dslr guide site I sent you, he has a little online ecourse for 15 bucks and you have unlimited access to his pdf files. He explains things very well and easy!!!! I highly recommened his online class...its at your own pace, just reading....I think the other lindz purchased that too!

Jen!! Girl, thanks so much!! At this point I am leaning toward Canon. That's what I have for a point and shoot and like it :) I really like the EOS 50D (D50?!?) but they have the 60D coming out soon, so maybe I will get if it is out. I keep meaning to ask the other Lynse what she has, I know it's a Canon, I just don't remember which one. That's nice that yours is light, that is one thing I know will take some getting used to.

I am off to go check out those sites, thanks so much!!
